How To Handle Emergencies

As with any emergency, one that affects the mouth requires immediate care. Although you may be tempted to wait to see if the issue subsides, time is of the utmost importance. If you do not receive the care you need, it can lead to the loss of your tooth. To save it from needing to be extracted, it is best to call us right away and then react accordingly to the situation.

Depending on the issue you are having, there are several things you can do at home while you wait for your appointment.

Knocked Out Tooth: Hold it by the crown and rinse it with water. Do not use any cleaners, scrub it, or dry it. Try to insert it back into the socket. If you are not successful, place it on the inside of your cheek or in a cup of milk.

Partially Dislodged Tooth: Gently try to push it back into position and bite on a piece of gauze to prevent it from moving.

Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth: Keep the tooth clean and avoid placing pressure on it. Use cold compresses to the outside of the face and over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any discomfort.

Lost or Damaged Dental Work: Do not try to repair a filling, crown, or oral appliance on your own. Stop using it immediately to avoid causing any additional damage. If you are having pain, home remedies can help to manage your discomfort.

Object Stuck Between Teeth: Use a piece of floss to try to remove it. Do not use any sharp instruments to try to get it out. If you cannot remove it, call our dental office.

Severe Toothache: This is often a sign of an infection that needs immediate care. We will get to the root of the problem to restore your oral health.

Injury to the Gum: Use gauze to try to control the bleeding. Leave it in place for 20-minute intervals if possible.

Injury to The Jaw: If there is a visible or suspected break to your jaw, you will need to head to your local emergency department. For any other injury, please contact our dental office.

Facial Pain or Swelling: This can be a sign of infection. We will find the cause of the swelling to cease your discomfort, so you can get back to your day.
